Navy launches 'Samudra Setu' to bring Indians stranded abroad

The Indian Navy has launched Operation 'Samudra Setu' as a national effort to bring back Indian citizens from abroad.  Indian naval ship Jalash is entering the port of the Republic of Maldives with another ship.  In the first phase of this operation, the evacuation operation of Indian citizens will start from 08 May 2020.

 The Indian government is closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19 epidemic on Indian citizens living abroad.  The Indian Navy has been instructed to make suitable preparations for evacuation of civilians stranded abroad.

 The Indian Mission in the Republic of Maldives is preparing a list of Indian citizens to be brought by naval ships.  After all their necessary medical screening, they will be brought to India by ships.  It is planned to bring a total of 1000 citizens during the first voyage, in which social distancing will also be taken care of along with the available onboard capacity and medical facilities.

Appropriate provisions have been made for evacuation operations in naval ships.  Citizens who will be brought from there will be provided with basic facilities and necessary medical facilities during sea voyage.  Stringent protocols have also been prescribed in view of the challenges associated with COVID-19.

These citizens brought from abroad will be landed in Kochi, Kerala and handed over to the state authorities for further care there.  This operation is proceeding in coordination with the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health, various agencies and state governments of the Government of India.
